This weekend, Nouman and I celebrated our 6 month anniversary. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. We didn’t do anything extravagant; we used this as an excuse to indulge in a sweet date night at Demetre’s.
Those of you celebrating Eid, I hope you had a great weekend celebrating with your family and friends. I had a jam-packed weekend that was full of fun and lots of junk food (ofcourse).
Today, I’m going to share one of my favourite chocolatey indulgences when I’m on the go. If you’ve never had it – you definitely need to try it. This yummy treat is a Chocolate Croissant from Marche – that’s right, a simple croissant. It’s fluffy, light, buttery and has just the right amount of chocolatey goodness.
And the best part? After 4:30pm (or 5pm), this delish munchie is 50% off at most Marche locations in the PATH.
I don’t know about you but I had a busy weekend. We went to a dawat on Friday, Wonderland on Saturday and a baby shower on Sunday. Best of all though, we got our wedding pictures!! I have been so excited to see them that I contemplated staying up all night to go through the pictures over and over again – unfortunately, Nouman isn’t feeling well so I couldn’t do that. I can’t wait to go through all the pictures and then share them with all of you! Hang in there as I wrap up a busy week and a half.
Back to today’s post – FOOD.
We’ve all had Mrs. Fields cookies, right? This summer, thanks to Noumans brother, I discovered that Mrs. Fields has icecream sandwiches. I know, you’re wondering what the heck is so special about an icecream sandwich that made me want to write about it. Well, if you’re a fan of icecream sandwiches and Mrs. Fields, you should already be salivating by the thought of the sandwich. At Mrs. Fields, you can choose two flavours of cookie to make your sandwich – not one but two! Can you imagine – all that variety of cookies to choose from?! They don’t have a variety of icecream flavours, just basics such as vanilla, double chocolate, chocolate mint and cookies and cream.
Our Order: Cookies and Cream icecream with a macadamia nut cookie on top and a chocolate lover cookie on the bottom.
Surprisingly, the combination wasn’t too sweet – although we didn’t have one whole sandwich each. The sandwich was soft and crunchy at the same time… yum, yum, yum!
The last few weeks have been food overload for me. I am absolutely guilty of gaining love weight since we’ve been married – we buy each other treats, go to dawats, and attend weddings. These days, everything in our life revolves around food. It’s so hard to avoid all the sinful goods.
For our 2 month anniversary, we decided not to go out for dinner. Instead, I wanted to get Nouman a sweet treat. I decided that I would go to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory since it had been a while – I am so thankful I did. I looked around for a while and then decided to get some chocolate dipped brownies; Nouman loves brownies and we both love all things dipped in chocolate (who doesn’t?!). Since it was my first time trying these, I decided to go safe: chocolate dipped brownies covered in almonds and M&M covered chocolate dipped brownies (for the kid that Nouman is).
The brownies were divinely delicious. I had thought that it might be too sweet but I’m glad I was wrong. The brownie is melt-in-your-mouth moist and the dipped chocolate adds a nice texture to the mix. The dipped chocolate has a great taste on its own – I asked Nouman to describe it and he said: amazing.
My favourite was the almond because I love anything covered in nuts. Nouman liked the M&Ms more. For Eid, we got a white chocolate drizzled chocolate dipped brownie (not pictured) for Nouman’s brother and he loved it more than the almond.
I’ve heard they have chocolate dipped cheesecake and chocolate dipped frozen bananas – I haven’t seen these at any location near me. I’d love to try them though!
I hope you all had a good weekend – I did. Nouman and I went to watch Kevin Hart on Friday and could not stop laughing; we laughed so hard that our stomachs hurt! There was an iftaar at our place on Saturday and I ate so much that I could still feel the food on Sunday. Gross.
After we came back from Barbados, we had 1 day at home before we jetted off to Chicago. Ofcourse, I had a list of places I had to eat at – unfortunately, we didn’t get to eat at alot of the places but we did go to The Cheesecake Factory!!
Can I just tell you how happy I was as soon as we entered? You know I love cake, right? I’m sure you can imagine my happiness when I saw the large display of cakes. Surprisingly though, I’m not a fan of cheesecake. I decided to go ahead and order a chocolatey cheesecake – I couldn’t be at the CHEESEcake Factory and have a regular cake. I ordered the Hershey Bar Cheesecake and it was divine!
On our 1 month anniversary, Nouman and I went to Demetre’s because I really wanted cheesecake. I could’ve puked after having a bite at Demetre’s. Maybe that’s what real cheesecake tastes like, it was the traditional New York style, but I’m going back to no-cheesecake-unless-it’s-from-The-Cheesecake-Factory.
I’ll just sit in a corner now and think about food until Iftaar time. Great.
This weekend marked our 1 month anniversary. Alhamdulilah. I can’t believe it!
To celebrate, Nouman and I went out for a movie and dessert – finally, some time for ourselves after the honeymoon
It’s been a whirlwind of a month – we got married, honeymooned in Barbados, travelled to Chicago and have been going to dawats. We’re finally settling into a routine (sort of)… so far so good Alhamdulilah!
I hope you all had a good weekend – I had a hectic weekend, as usual. My family and I worked on some projects for the mehendi, I picked out linens for our mehendi, packed 2 suitcases and went furniture shopping with the Mister. It was a pretty tiring weekend but productive aswell.
Today’s Munchie is a spotlight on a local cupcake place, Swirls.
I first heard of Swirls Cupcakes at University and fell in love from the second one of their cupcakes touched my lips. For those of you who don’t know, I am not a big fan of cupcakes. I would much rather eat a chocolatey cake; I can never manage to eat icing off cupcakes – something about the texture totally grosses me out.
Anyway, Swirls offers some of the best cupcakes I’ve had in the West end of the city (does the East side even have bakeries? Ha-ha). The cake is fresh and has just the right amount of moistness – it melts in your mouth without crumbling as you bite into it (who wants to waste even the smallest crumb? Not me!). While I’m not a fan of icing, I have sampled it – the icing is light and not overtly sweet. I dislike it when the icing overpowers the actual cake; at Swirls, the balance is just right.
Swirls Cupcakes offers 11 scrumptious flavours – from Raspberry Beret to Lemon Luau to Cookies and Dream. Of the 11, I have tasted 7 and loved every single one. For those of you (like me) that don’t like icing, try their Marbelous Swirl cupcake – instead of icing, the cupcake is topped with chocolate ganache. Yum, yum, yum!
Is your mouth watering yet?
An added bonus? Swirls bakery is a family run, nut-free facility – who doesn’t love supporting independent stores?
p.s. I think cupcakes are a great idea for engagements, Nikkah’s and bridal showers! Want more cupcakes? Check out my review on Prairie Girl Bakery in Toronto.
A quick update on life before I get started on Monday’s Munchies – Alhamdulilah, I am feeling much better today. I had a mini breakdown for the last 2 weeks but once I cried everything out, I felt much better. I’m still not sure why everything was getting to me so much… but yes, I feel less stressed and am hoping to stay calm!
Onto Monday’s Munchies…
I bought a yummy chocolate tea last week in the hopes that I will eat less chocolate. The good news is that my chocolate craving has decreased, but the bad news is that my face is breaking out. I’ll be blogging about the tea soon, so hang in there for the review. Anyway…
I was talking to my mom about chocolate a few days ago and had to share a picture of a chocolatey treat that my parents love.
My mom is an absolute chocolate addict. She loves chocolate in all forms and my dad always gets her chocolatey treats when they go out (I know, so cute – MashAllah!). A few years ago, during an evening stroll (my parents love taking walks), my parents discovered a place that sells a treat called the “Volcano Lava Cake.” Basically, the Volcano Lava Cake is a chocolate cake, oozing with a warm fudge ganache and topped with a handful of pecans. Ever since my parents discovered this mouth-watering dessert, they have made it their go-to place when my mom craves chocolate. My dad recently took my mom there as a lead-up to their anniversary celebrations
Unfortunately, this place isn’t in Toronto.
Anyone have suggestions on where I can find something as scrumptious in the GTA?
First of all, I’d like to thank all of you for entering the Birthday Giveaway!! Many of you entered via email, but unfortunately, I did not include those in picking the winner. The winner is Anisa Tayab – I’ll be contacting you tonight!!
And now, it’s time for a yummy munchie!
The first time I had a macaron was almost three years ago at the Distillery District. I had always thought that macaroon and macaron was the same thing – but it’s SO not! In North America, macaroons are generally made from coconuts. On the other hand, macarons are a confectionery with a filling sandwiched between two meringue “cookies.” I have always loved macaroons but had been excited to try macarons as soon as I laid eyes on some a few years ago.
Petit Thuet is a little place close to my work – which makes it easy for me to slip in and try their yummy flavours. Here’s what I think:
I’d love to know if you have a go-to Macaron place in the city!
I am soooo tired from the weekend! I’m going to be sharing lots of pictures and ideas in the coming weeks – bare with me as I struggle to find time
Going to share some awesome Ferrero Cheesecake pictures today
